Great Winter Expectations
The Black Sea resort of Sochi beat cities from South Korea and Austria to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Sochi offers a unique and stunning setting for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Two thousand meter-high mountains, powdery snow and comfortable winter temperatures are a stone’s throw away from the beaches of the Black Sea. Sochi itself is beautiful and often referred to as the Russian Riviera. Visitors to the Games would surely have a red carpet treatment at a region that is legendary for its hospitality.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is often seen skiing on the slopes of Krasnaya Polyana. Traveling to Guatemala to support Sochi, he was a vocal supporter of the bid boosting the city's chances for success.
Sochi will have to build almost everything from scratch. It currently has just a handful of ski lifts and upscale hotels. The silver lining - $12 billion Russia pledged to the Games. Russia, a winter sports powerhouse has never hosted the Winter Olympics. This mistake has been corrected and everybody is hoping the Games will leave behind newly constructed state-of-the-art facilities to turn the Black Sea resort into the country's main winter sports hub.
Travel times between the coastal cluster and mountain zone will vary between 40 to 50 minutes. A new three-to-four lane highway and a light rail line will be constructed to facilitate access to the sports zones.
The Sochi 2014 Winter Games will undoubtedly serve as a gateway to the future for Russia, opening unprecedented opportunities for the development of winter sport thus revamping the entire Sochi region.
